Statistics Canada figures indicate that women from census divisions north of Sudbury represent under 8 percent of provincial STEM degree completions despite comprising 11 percent of the female population aged 18-30. Limited public transit and seasonal road conditions further restrict daily access to regional campuses.
Workforce composition data reveal that northern Ontario's mining and forestry sectors employ women in technical roles at rates below 15 percent, partly because training pipelines remain concentrated in southern urban centers. Broadband gaps persist in 34 percent of rural postal codes, complicating remote laboratory simulations.
STEM Education for Women requires applicants to demonstrate acceptance into programs that maintain active partnerships with employers located within the applicant's economic region. This condition channels funding toward institutions that already possess placement capacity in northern or eastern Ontario rather than Toronto-centric networks.
The program further mandates that applicants from rural census subdivisions provide evidence of secured housing within commuting distance of the partnered employer site. This documentation standard accounts for Ontario's specific north-south infrastructure divide and avoids generic relocation assumptions used in other provincial scholarship frameworks.
