Grant for Supporting Open Access Scholarly Publishing Initiatives in Ontario (Canada)
GrantID: 73934
Grant Funding Amount Low: $5,200
Deadline: September 10, 2025
Grant Amount High: $52,000
Summary
This grant supports Canadian scholarly journals—especially those in the social sciences or humanities—that seek to offset costs associated with publishing and distributing academic content. Two tiers of support are offered: established journals may receive up to $52,000 per year, while emerging journals can access up to $42,400 per year. Both funding streams span three-year terms.
The primary intent is to help journals transition to or maintain open-access publishing, ideally without author fees (APCs), and to enhance digital dissemination. Established journals that currently use delayed open access or charge APCs may still apply, provided they present a concrete plan to move to immediate open access without fees by 2028.
Eligible applicants include Canadian scholarly journal editors (often the editor-in-chief), operating under the auspices of a Canadian postsecondary institution or non-profit organization. Journals must be peer-reviewed, publish in English and/or French, and meet editorial board or ownership requirements tied to Canadian academic institutions. They also need to adhere to standards such as licensing (e.g., Creative Commons) and indexing in the Directory of Open Access Journals—or provide a plan to comply by 2028.
Funds can be used for a range of direct publication costs: copyediting, layout, translation, digital platform hosting, dissemination, marketing and promotional efforts, and innovation projects such as metadata enhancements, accessibility improvements, or multimedia content. An innovation supplement of up to $10,000 is available to support new publishing practices.
In essence, this program offers substantial support for Canadian academic journals committed to peer-reviewed, open-access publishing. By easing financial burdens and encouraging innovation, it aims to bolster the dissemination and quality of social sciences and humanities research through sustained publication excellence.
